Ethanol has nothing to do with "butter"...."butter" is a dairy product, not a vegetable oil product. Try eating "butter" instead of "margarine"...you'll live longer.

Is anyone surprised when over last 20-30 years farming has been on major downturn in most of the world. How many people on this forum know a full time farmer, let alone have ever worked the land to produce their food? The world population is expanding and our food production is shrinking.... it's a logical process, but nonetheless scary for it.

Small time farmer is a dying breed and the corporate owned farmer is replacing it. I see farm houses for sale and auctions of equipment weekly. I live in the heartland of corn, soy beans, Dairy and now ethanol production. If Gas keeps going up most corporate farmers will be looking to supply the ethanol plants since this is where the money is. This intern will reduce the production of edible crops. Overtime this will return to edible becuase thats where the money is. But for right now get ready to pay more

What's really funny is that the American government still pays farmers NOT to produce food.
Interesting, eh?

Yes it is but the program was originally designed to protect the good land so to maintain it for years. The farmer would claim one bit and not plant on it for the year then switch to another next year. Unfortunately some farmers take advantage of the government acres program by not planting on creeks crevasse low lying valleys that pool rain water etc... Pretty much the worst land they own. And they keep the government acres on this portion.
And to answer the question on butter/ethanol they do effect each other
Its Economics when corn/soybean/wheat producers jump the bandwagon and switch there crop to corn for ethanol, and ethanol only... less grain is available for cattle. Less grain will bring prices up. This will increase the prices of milk/butter etc… since Dairy cows feed on grain

Corn is what is used to feed cows, at least here in the US. What about in other parts of the world?

That's part of the increased food prices. Another part of the increased food prices is because gas has gone up crazy amounts here in the US. I don't think we'll have food riots over-here as long as that rust-spore doesn't completely devastate our crops, but I don't see prices going down in the near future for awhile either.

food costs are due to an increase in fuel prices. Can't get the food to where it needs to be without spending cash on fuel.
Sure, cows eat corn....but they also eat other things as well.
If they were to remove or scale down corn-based products from human consumption, obesity rates as well as health problem rates would drop, fuel prices would go down(ethanol for fuel), and food costs will drop because if corn is only being used for fuel and feeding livestock, we have an abundance again like we used to have.
Corn is not infinitely renewable. There's growing seasons, lack of land, the necessity for letting a field sit a season to renew its nutrients....after a while you just run out of production. Stop eating corn tortillas, corn chips, corn on the cob....this stuff isn't good for you anyway. Eat wheat-based products, live healthier and pay less at the pump at the same time.

I eat corn. I buy it in a tin.
Everything is costing more now, even my corn. I just payed 76p for 2 pints of milk and £1.20p for a loaf of bread. Thank god I don't buy petrol as it is 107p per liter. Thats like a bit more than 980 cents per gallon!!!! It is no wonder it costs so much to import grain.
Does anyone do geography here? Is a shortage of food and energy supply a precursor to war?

Shortages of food can lead to revolutions. Shortage of money can lead to wars or revolutions (destitue and starving masses don't suffer foolish governments long). That's how the french and russian revolutions happened. Overtaxation was one reason for the american revolution as well. Germany stopped paying WWI tributes and elected hitler in part because they were so poor. I'm not sure what a severe energy crisis would do though.
